John Lewis didn’t only “get in the way”; he made a way for all. John Lewis’ humility, courage, and perseverance in times of adversity is surely a model for us to aspire and for us to live.

Words are easy, but few people are willing to put their lives on the line as John Lewis did. He never lost his drive and his commitment. At an age when most of us are retired, he was still working relentlessly to improve people's lives. He was a giant of our times, and his loss is a loss to everyone who loves justice. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

Every time I was fortunate enough to be in his presence, I would well up with emotion. An acknowledgement that I was in the presence of rare greatness, and an expression of the deep gratitude I felt for all the physical blows he took so I could exercise my right to vote and achieve my dreams unfettered by the chains of Jim Crowism. I am so thankful I was blessed with opportunities to personally thank him for his sacrifices, leadership, and service. Rest in Peace Congressman Lewis.

A titan has been called home. His works are now complete. We must commit to honor the works of a courageous leader, the Honorable John Lewis, by going to the polls to vote each time the doors open. This is the one act all people of color must perform with great enthusiasm, in numbers greater than ever before, to keep empowered the legacy of this exceptional civil rights legend.

Dearest Congressman Lewis. I don't have all the words to express what an honor it has been for me to move to the South and make my home in your District. You were not only our Representative and leader, you truly were our friend. Anyone that got to know the body of your life contributions could see that you were concerned about the civil rights for us ALL. Your passion for injustice in all ways was a lesson to see in action. And...the memories of you waiting no matter the weather, every year to be a part of your 'can't miss' parade here in Inman Park and seeing the people flood to you and you taking the time seeming as excited as the people to engage. Congressman, you took time for everyone; every occasion; every single time I was in your presence. You took time to impart 'You are important' in every soul you encountered. I want to just take that into account for everything I do, in honor of you. May we all live up to the expectations you have for humanity.

JOHN Lewis, you have led me most of my life. I’m a little old white girl born in Richmond, Virginia whose parents taught me about all leaders, including yourself. You guided my path without knowing, and I thank you and wish you well on this new journey. I have been praying for you, and you have been in my heart every day since you announced this last fight of your life last December. I was hoping you would win this fight, but in a way, you did. You have total peace now, and we will keep fighting for justice and equality. I became a criminal defense lawyer to do just that, so thank you. Godspeed, sir.

I am simply heartbroken. My hero. My personal Jiminy Cricket - always on my shoulder whispering to me that I can do better, be better. His was a voice and moral compass that few will be able to follow, but we can try. In his name and memory, we can do better and be better for everyone, together. RIP John Lewis #GoodTrouble
